commercial machine lasts forever
I have had this unit since 1997, it should last forever.We use it for making iced tea and coffee at least once but mostly twice a day.We have it on a $15.00 appliance timer so the water is not heated between 10pm and 6am (it only takes15 mins to heat up the tank if it is off) I make coffee at 6:30am it takes 5 minsto make a pot (I can make as little as 4 cups) then I turn it off till the evening whenwe make tea. I got tired of buying the $20 coffee pots that only last a year.

Bunn Coffee Brewer
I can't really comment on the quality of the coffee this machine makes as someone I know purchased this thing for their home. But they made a trial batch and it seemed to be very good. The instructions are mildly confusing as there is no off switch. The way this machine works is that you leave it *unplugged* the first time you fill it. You fill it with 2 & 1/2 carafes of cold water. 1/2 will "spill" out as per the instructions. *Then* you plug it in. When you're ready to make coffee setup your grounds, filter and whatnot. Then pour a carafe of cold water into the top. Put your empty carafe on the warmer plate really fast and water will flow out almost immediately, the coffee is done in a couple of minutes, it's really fast.The reason there is no ON or OFF switch because the "initial" reservoir is kept warm in the machine at all times and the machine just sits there 24/7 happily keeping the reservoir water warm until you're ready to use it. I've had mine since 1998! Still going strong.
Tired of burning through cheapie pkastic drip coffee makers? I was. This is great...resturant coffee anytime. It works as well today (2011) as it did when I took it out of the box! It keeps the water inside hot by reheating it periodically. Don't worry, you'll never notice it on your electric bill. Well made, built to last. The VP-17 is made to fit under wall mounted kitchen cabinets. It comes with plastic pitcher for water. I use about 1/4 of the pitcher for one cup (mug) of coffee and about 2 scoops of ground coffee.

My Favorite Indulgence
This, along with my commercial Bunn Coffee Grinder, is my favorite indulgence. I have owned a Bunn designed for home use for 20 years and I finally took the plunge and bought this one. Bunn is the industry standard and for good reason. Every aspect of this brewer is quality.Bunns work differently than most home drip machines in that they have a water reservoir that holds about 2 1/2 "loads" of water at any one time that is constantly kept at brewing temperature - the machine is "on" all the time. This is what allows you to brew a pot of coffee instantly. No waiting for the water to heat up. The switches on the front are for the warming plates, which I don't use. I prefer to transfer the hot brewed coffee to an air pot so it doesn't get bitter but still stays hot. This particular model doesn't need to be plumbed. You just pour the correct amount of water from the supplied pitcher into the top of the machine - hence the name "Pour-o-matic". It makes 12 cups of perfectly...

Only does one thing...
... and that is make coffee, but it does it damned well.I am not going to tell you the specifics of how a Bunn makes coffee; the previous reviewer did it very well and if you have ever eaten in a restaurant, doughnut shoppe, or coffee shop you have probably seen one.I use the VP 17 in my home. You may ask why since this is really intended for commercial use. Well I have owned this unit for nearly four years without a hiccup. Grind the beans, pour the pre-measured amount of filtered (I made a mark with a permanent marker on the water jug) water and viola - the same identically made cup of coffee day after day in less than two minutes!!!I mean I am drinking coffee in less time than most makers are just thinking about heating the water, and it is the same cup day after day after day. No surprises.It does cost more than your usual home unit, but this thing is built like a Sherman Tank and if you actually needed it could produce enough coffee...

very happy with new machines
This machine starts brewing coffee as soon as you pour water in. The switches are only for turning the warmers on or off. I appreciate the simplicity, no water hook-up and no plastic hot water dispenser hanging off the front of the machine.

Restaurant style coffee on tap...
I should have gotten this coffee maker years ago. After all the "High End" coffee makers that promise the "best" coffee and end up failing after a year or so just after the warranty expires, I finally just got the Bunn and am so glad I did. It just makes the best coffee we've ever had at home. It's not so tall that it won't fit under the kitchen cabinet. As we've only had it for a month I cannot rate on longevity, but the machine is very basic with no timers and such to malfunction and it is made to be repaired not replaced. Parts are easily obtainable, but I don't think that will be an issue for years. My significant other was leery of no timer to have coffee ready in the morning, but has come to realize that 3 1/2 minutes isn't that long to wait. Pour water in, coffee comes out. I saw a review where an appliance timer was utilized to conserve energy as the machine is "on" all the time. The heater isn't on except to keep the water at brewing temperature so, consequently, cycles...

Opposite of bad experience and really quite good.
I have read the other reviewers review of product and service from Bunn and my experience is quite the opposite. I purchased this coffee maker six years ago and it has workered like a charm. Only until recentlty have I began to notice that the coffee has not been very hot and really almost luke warm. Even though I am not very elertically inclined I decided to try and repair the unit rather than purchase a new one. I read the manual and while not particularlly clear I have seen worse. However what the manual wasn't clear about the Bunn Service department was very clear and walked me step by step through the troubleshooting procedure until I found the problem. The only thing is I did have to call to get clarity about an issue and the person I spoke with then had an accent and was a little difficult to understand. He also was a little put out that I could not make out what he was trying to explain to me. In his defense however I had called at 5 minutes before closing and was on...
