Low light focus
I use this external flash unit with my Canon Rebel xTi. The flash does a great job calculating the amount of light it needs to release to expose the photo, making grossly over exposed or underexposed photos a thing of the past. The ability to bounce the flash off of medium height white ceilings gives you great looking photos to the point where I now prefer using my flash instead of relying on high ISOs, fast lenses and low aperature numbers. Although flash photography is a tricky subject, the casual shooter can leave this flash in automatic mode and get wonderfully exposed photos. However, in my opinion, the BEST PART of this external flash is that it enables you to focus MUCH faster than the built in flash and this is reason alone to pick up the Speedlite 430EX II. Previously, when shooting in low light settings, the camera/lens would struggle to focus and the flash would emit several highly annoying test flashes. The Speedlite has no problem finding and focusing on your subject in...

Indoor miracles
I had been holding off on purchasing an external flash for my XTI for months, making up all sorts of excuses as to why I shouldn't own one. It's too big, I'll never use it, $200+ for a flash of light is obscene and on and on the excuses went. My wife surprised me by getting me one for my birthday and after using it for 6 months I couldn't be happier. How did I ever live without this thing?I take a lot of pictures indoors of my son. He's a 9 month old boy that's not quite ready to be outside all the time. I've got the 50mm 1.8 but it just isn't fast enough in the dim lighting of our home and the on camera flash is worthless. Ever since I got this flash I'd say that 80% of the pictures I take indoors and outdoors are taken with this flash. Below is a list of all of the pro's and cons I could come up with.Pros:- Fast recycle time. I can take several burst shots in 1 second and the flash fires each time. You won't miss many pictures because the flash isn't...

An amazing flash
This is expensive, but worth it. When I bought my 300D in October of 2003 I got the 420EX flash with it. When I upgraded to the 20D I also upgraded my flash to the 580EX. The difference between them is astounding. The 420 did basically nothing. Well, it flashed, but that is it. The 580 has a stobe setting! I can set my camera for a 10 second exposure and tell the flash to operate at 1/10 power and 1hz to get stop motion pictures! It seems to have a rocket-fast recycle time, even with the partially used batteries I stuck in it out of my 420. I accidentally had my 20D in continuous mode with the flash on, and accidentally took four flash photographs in less than a second (the flash didn't fire on the fifth photograph). Once my battery pack arrives I should be extra-dangerous.The 580 is a master flash, so I was able to wirelessly control my old 420 flash and have them both go off at the same time. The flash is complicated. The manual on the...

Leave the 420EX at home - this is IT!
Disappointed with large room/high ceiling picture results with my Canon 420EX speedlight (see my review) mounted on my Canon dRebel - sent me shopping about 6 months ago for more light (you can never have enough light). My E-TTL flash metering with the 420EX also proved uneven - with sometimes unexpected over exposures and blown highlights. A solution for both was found! The 580EX appears to get me an additional TWO F-Stops and much better metering (E-TTL2) on my new Canon D20. Less time in Photoshop with better exposures, fewer blown highlights and the fantastic multi-shot strobe function are paying dividends with every indoor photoshoot I cover. It is worth the price for people who use the camera for a living - or are serious "pro-sumer" phototographers.I've since purchased a Canon D20 camera - paired it with my 580EX and am EXTREMELY happy with the result. The two items are made for each other. As happy as I am with my 300D (dRebel) and overall happy with my...

It is what you pay for....
Expensive, yes.... But worth every cent...Here is what i liked about it so far....The PRO's:1. It is fast !! It may give you 5-6 pics in a row without halting and "asking for a little bit of time to rest" ;)2. The Manual settings, if you like to use it... you will love it...3. Nice Battery usage (I am using Sony Recharg. 2300mh and 2800mh) and it takes quite a lot of photos... Just about what the manual says...100-300, depending on how much light power you will be demanding from it...4. I am still about to find more good stuff about it... As for the size... As for the catchligt...The CONS:1. It's Expensive.... A Big Drawback for some..2. The Battery door compartment, could be better on a piece of equipment like this...Like said before... It is what you pay for....The best on it's category... (this go for all Canon Lover's);)

270ex Compact marvel
I purchased this flash for my new (and awesome!) Canon 5D Mark II. Most of the time, the Mark II can handle indoor and low lighting conditions without any issue; it's quite usable up to 3200 ISO. Still, even in RAW mode it can't handle all lighting conditions as it doesn't have an onboard flash. I like using flash for fill lighting especially for shooting flowers and insects. That's where the 270ex comes in as a carry around flash. The most surprising thing was how small and light it is; it really does fit in a shirt pocket. It powers up and is ready much faster than I expected considering it just takes 2 batteries. Considering the low profile, the forward angle of the build helps to eliminate lens shadows on long lenses. Still, it isn't without some faults; it isn't the build quality of a 580ex or 430ex. It also isn't the widest coverage I've seen on a flash with just 28 & 50mm settings. Still it's pretty great considering that it isn't supposed to be a replacement for a...

Nice option for those wanting "a little more"
The 270EX is a simple, two AA battery flash that should be perfect for someone wishing to add a bit more power or bounce to an digital EOS camera, or one of a few Powershots with a hot shoe. The flash is very small, and balances well on cameras like the Powershot G10. I did most of my flash evaluating on a Rebel T1i, and was pleased with the handling of the duo.The flash has almost nothing to set for increased power. Slide it on, turn it on, take pictures. Unlike fancier flashes, there is no power zoom flash panel, but you can manually set the flash to get a bit more distance with telephoto lenses by simply pulling the flash head out a notch. If you want to make your closeup shots a bit less harsh, pull the head out (as per above), and you can tilt the head of the flash up at different angles to bounce the flash. My simple test worked very well, with much more pleasing skin tones (although bouncing does seem to lose, on all flashes, some of the...

Nice, but all features do not work on Rebel XTi
Nice flash, better than the built-in pop-up flash on my Rebel XTi. However, the AF-assist on the flash will not work on an XTi, even with the lastest XTi firmware. I didn't know this before buying and will may return the flash.Update (7/22/09): I've decided to keep the 270EX after all. The compact size is the main reason why I've decided to keep it. I will just have to compromise and put up with using my built-in flash instead in those really low light situations where I want to auto-focus.For those that do not know, the AF-assist feature in the 270EX is supposed to help in low light situations where there isn't enough light for auto-focus. The 270EX works in the same way as the XTi's pop-up flash in that it fires a few bursts in order to help auto-focus.I don't know why Canon had not decided to offer a firmware upgrade to support the 270EX, especially since the XTi is still displayed on the Canon USA cameras page.Update (7/5/11):...

Great Book
I originally borrowed this book from a friend, before purchasing it, and found it incredibly useful in learning about the Canon Speedlite. It's a great read, and a great reference book, going over how to use the flash in real world situations, and the results from using it. It goes over all the Canon Speedlite systems, so you won't be left out. Even if you use one particular flash, you should know your options, this book goes over those options.

Very useful, and not only for Speedlite owners/users
The book is very well written, and it includes a lot of information that is useful even if you're not using Speedlites. There is a lot of information about lighting in general, including using sunlight for your pictures, or using light modifiers to reflect or change light from any source you might have. There is also some advice about posing for pictures and framing, about the kind of gear you need for various kinds of photography (action, scenery etc.), as well as some info about white balance. The book includes a white balance card and a color-test card. You can obviously use essentially all the suggestions in the book with any comparable quality flashes, not only Canon Speedlites (like Nikons, for example, though of course you get most features only if you use a Canon flash on a Canon camera, and a Nikon one on a Nikon). The main drawback is that you find out how many expensive things you might still want to buy in order to obtain great lighting for your pictures (like a...
