Very happy with this lens
I am thrilled to have bought this lens to mount on my Nikon D80 after having read loads of reviews on the few options available like the Sigma 50-500 or the Nikon 135-400 and 80-400. I wanted the longest possible range below $1,500 in a recognizable Brand. I narrowed my choice to the 50-500 or this one. The Optical Stabilizer and the fact that Sigma had proven itself with the 50-500 were the determining factors in my decision. So far I shot some 200 pictures of various subjects at various distances handholding the camera with the OS turned on. Half way through my shots I reverted from full manual mode to Aperture control and noticed an improvement in the sharpness and colors which tells me that I need to hone my skills with this lens. So far, I am amazed at the quality of my shots with this huge glass. I take all my pictures with a -.7 exposure compensation as I like very vivid pictures and until I develop a better feel for what the lens can do I will continue to used it with Aperture...

Great Lens!
I just received this lens and made a test shot I've made with other lenses. I took a shot of a satellite dish over a half a block away. Handheld. Magnifying it with Photoshop not only can I see the 'Dish Network' clearly, but magnifying a little more I can read the 'TM' underneath the logo. Clear as a bell. This lens is a vast improvement over the 170-500 model. I used that lens on a wildlife trip and had to jack up the ISO to 800-1600 to get decent shutter speeds and a clear picture. Unfortunately that introduced noise, really bad in some shots. The D300 is much better than the D200 in that regard, but the lens was pretty much unusable without a tripod. This lens will alleviate any of those problems.I usually buy Nikon lenses. This and the Sigma earlier models including the 170-500 (which I had to buy for a trip and now I'm selling) are the only lenses I could find that gave a substantial difference over the Nikon 70-300 VR. This ultra-telephoto zoom lens covers a telephoto range up to 500mm and allows photographers to bring the subject close and short perspective. Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower. It is ideal for sports, wildlife and landscape photography with handheld shooting. Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration. This lens is equipped with a rear focus system that minimizes fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing capability. The addition of the (optional) 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters produce a 210-700mm F7-9 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens or a 300-1000mm F10-13 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens respectively. Essentially, the Sigma 150-500 OS is an indirect answer to the Canon 100-400mm F4 IS L lens. The problem with most comparisons is that the Canon F4 costs significantly more. The direct point is that the Canon does perform marginally better in every aspect. The Sigma clearly wins in cost-performance ratio but that also varies based on your intended use and preferences. The main difference is the 70%+ price in the lenses. The Sigma 150-500 is *NOT* a substitute for a low-light high speed use telephoto lens such as F2.8 lenses. The Sigma 150-500mm ultra-telephoto zoom lens covers a telephoto range of up to 500mm, letting you bring almost any subject close for short-perspective shots. The lens employs Sigma's original Optical Stabilizer (OS) function, which gives you access to shutter speeds approximately four stops slower without blurring the image. As a result, you can capture low-light, long-distance shots such as football plays, wildlife profiles, and landscape scenes without using a tripod for each photo. In addition, the lens incorporates a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for quick, high-speed autofocusing, along with a rear focus system that guarantees optimum image quality throughout the entire zoom range. And photographers will love the three special low dispersion (SLD) glass elements, which correct for chromatic aberration, and the super multilayer lens coating, which reduces flare and ghosting. Other details include an option for full-time manual focusing, a close focusing distance of 86.6 inches, and an 86mm filter size. Compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x tele converters--which produce a 210-700mm length or 300-1000mm length respectively--the Sigma 150-500mm lens carries a one-year warranty.

I am amazed
I've had this lens for a few days and am very pleased with it. Given the fact that it's covering such a wide range, I didn't expect it to have very high IQ, yet I am pleasantly surprised. I measured it against my super sharp Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII with TC-17, both @ 340mm f/6.3 and f/8, and the IQ is about the same on a D300s, even though on a full frame D3s, the 70-200mm + TC-17 is slightly sharper. This is quite remarkable, because 70-200 f/2.8 VRII is one of the best lenses Nikon has ever made, and it can produce better pictures at 100mm than the highly regarded Tokina 100mm macro lens I own, and even when shooting macros, the 70-200 + TC-17 + Canon 500D combo is comparable to the Tokina 100mm.Image color is great, with vivid contrast. I had a few bird shots at fully extended 500mm and they turned out to be great pictures. CA is minimum too, only slightly visible when fully zoomed in, and no worse than my 70-200+1.7 combo. Focus is fast, even though it has always...

Product Description

Sigma's APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM is an advanced optical design of this 10x power high-performance zoom lens that covers the standard-to-super-telephoto range, now with the added advantage of Sigma's own Optical Stabilization which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Sigma is the only one to offer OS for Sony and Pentax mount where the image is stabilized in the viewfinder if chosen.

For many photographers, having an "all-in-one" lens is an absolute dream. Especially for nature photographers, the idea of a lens suitable for landscape photography at the short end of the zoom range, while still having enough reach for wildlife is a great option. Add to that, the ability to close focus on small objects in the field such as flowers and it's the perfect backpackers' lens. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range and super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. With no need to change lenses, there is less chance of dirt or moisture entering the camera and fouling the imaging sensor. Top to learn more

Focus-Focus
Just received the lens. Using with a Cannon EOS XTi.Pros- Sturdy feel to the lens- Impressive focal length range.- Good picture quality throughout the range (speaking as a non-pro)- OS pretty good. Taking acceptable quality hand-held shots at full extension in bright sun.Cons- Autofocus not working out-of-the-box. Of note that this lens was NOT in the serial number range specified by SIGMA's customer alert.- Very poor response time on queries to SIGMA's tech service.- Some (minor) vignetting noticable at longer focal lengths.- Does not work with my TAMRON teleconverter even though this TC does function with my Cannon lens.- HeavyReturning the lense for replacement through AMAZON due to the autofocus issue. Will see how well the next one does.UPDATE:Received replacement lense from AMAZON with working autofocus. Took it out today for extensive testing and am well...

Nice Lens
Rented this lens for my son and nikon 500mm f4 for myself for yellowstone photo vacation. Honestly the 50-500 was considerably more useful. OS seemed to be better or at least equal to nikon vr, only slightly less sharp, contrast and colors are also very good. Size difference is huge and he was able to get shots before i could manuver the huge nikon lens. Autofocus was snappy and acurate, he was able to get spot on pictures of golden eagles at 500mm in flight free hand held. I grabbed his camera to jump into a riverbottom and get pictures of a bull moose, that's when i realized just how good this lens seems to be. 6.3 is a little dim but with ISO performance getting better less of an issue. I've always had issues with non-nikon lenses hunting but didn't experience it or at least it was small enough it didn't leave an impression. Distortion seems aceptable and after i review the photos a bit i will likely purchase one.

Wonderful Lens
I'm a professional photographer[...] and until now, have never owned anything but Canon or Nikon lenses. For years I specialized in sports photography and the lenses I most often used were a 400 f:2.8 and a 600 f:4. I moved on to other fields of specialty and decided I didn't want to lug around that kind of weight and got rid of the big glass. Now, several years later, I decided I needed a long lens again, but in a decidedly smaller package. After trying an unnamed top manufacturer's 80~400 lens and being unhappy with the quality of the image, I dared to try Sigma's new 120~400. I ran the lens through the ringer and tested it under every situation I could think of and through it all, it has performed flawlessly! In fact, I was ready to accept a little less sharpness, so when I evaluated my results, I was thrilled. I highly recommend this lens and I have the utmost confidence in this beautiful package of glass.

Lens for all Seasons
I am a recovering pro shooter (semi-retired) and bought this lens to shoot my grandchildren in sports activities. I have fallen in love w/it. It is the largest of 4 Sigma lenses for my Nikons (2-300's, 1-200) and I bought it on a whim. WOW! Nice and crisp, can be handneld even by 66 year-old shooter! OS is not overly noisy, certainly not distracting and has given me the freedom from tri/mono-pods for daylight sports, F2.8 isn't necessary in sunlight for me. I saved a bundle, built a rep as the greatest G-Pop and compromised nothing in the process. BTW, I have some wonderful wildlife shots as well, since I live within a mile of the Delaware River.I recommend this lens w/o equivocation under the uses I have put it to. Is it the best? No, but w/o it I couldn't have gotten the images I have. That's the best.

Another Sigma with calibration issues
I bought this lens after returning a 150-500 for back and front focusing issues on a Nikon D700. Well, the 120-400 suffered from the same problems. My copy had bad back focus at 400mm. Using the D700's AF Tune function I could compensate to get it to focus correctly at 400mm, but that introduced severe front focus issues from 120-250mm. Overall, I could get the 150-300mm range to focus well if I gave up on the 120mm and 400mm ends.As with the 150-500 order, Amazon's shipping department did a totally inadequate job of padding the shipping box. There wasn't enough airbags in the box to prevent the Sigma box from sliding around let alone protect it on all sides. In all, my two Sigma lens orders received the same level of packaging attention as the book and DVD orders I've received over the years. This is a very bad situation for anyone interested in purchase precision optics from Amazon.

Sigma 120 to 400 lens
I was looking for a long lens with stablization, this suited my needs. I ordered it with Amazon.com. I was hoping it would come prior to my trip which I was taking on my motorcycle. It came, great service from the dealer. I took the lens on the trip, used it extensively and love the pictures taken with it. Yes, it is a heavy lens, but I handheld it for the shots I took as had no room for tripod. Shots are sharp. As were taken mainly in the bright sun, had no issues with shake. Used the OS sometimes mainly to try it out more than needed.Overall love the lens and am happy with the purchase and would recommend the lens to anyone looking for a long lens.

Great lens on a Canon 50D
One of the major reasons I got the lens was to take candid, hand-held, action shots of boats and the people in them. My platform for taking the pictures would be a rolling, pitching boat. After a month of using the lens, I am well-satisfied with its abilities. I usually use ISO settings of 1000 or higher. Output is to a website photo gallery or print rarely larger than 8.5" x 11". Graininess has not been an issue with the Canon 50D. The other lens I was considering was the Sigma 200-500. I decided in favor of the Sigma 120-400 because of the 77mm filter size (I already have a bunch), size/weight, concern that 200 was large a lower end and 500 likely difficult to hand-hold in a boat.I relied heavily on Amazon reviews and other reviews in making my selection. One Amazon reviewer noted that the lens was shipped in a box with virtually no protection. This was my experience as well. The lens came through fine, contrary to my expectation when I first opened the box.

Great value for the price
I've only found a few reviews of this lens online and virtually all of them criticize it for not being sharp enough when compared to top-of-the line lenses. Okay, that's true. It isn't as sharp as a lens twice or three times as expensive.I've found it to be plenty sharp enough to take excellent pictures and at a price that I could afford to actually have it instead of just pining away after a more expensive lens. The image stabilization is very effective, focus is quick and reliable, and the lens itself is well made and even nice looking. Yes, it's a bit heavy, but not too heavy to shoot handheld, thanks to the image stabilization. The included tripod mount ring makes it an ideal combo for hiking when used with a monopod.I've fallen in love with using this lens for candid portraits: you can shoot from far enough away that your subject doesn't notice and "ham it up" or hide. It also is very nice for light macro work, since it focuses at about 60",...
