Affordable, practicle, lots of room
This is my second rocket box. I love the room provided especially for long items, skis, fishing poles. I really does hold a lot of stuff. There's no wind noise and no measurable affect on fuel economy. I can easily find my vehicle in a crowded parking lot.The new improved attachment clamps fit my factory rack without the need for buying rail mounts like in the old version saving me $100.I did prefer the old style supports though the new ones are probably more reliable than the older "shock type" found on auto hatches and hoods. If you need storage space you can't go wrong with the big Rocket Box. Simply the best
We have had a few roof top storage configurations. The RocketBox simply kicks butt over the rest. We do not have the latest version with the new easier clamps, but we couldn't get along w/o our box ... having three boys and tons of gear. Top to learn more

Product Description
It's Yakima's most popular rooftop cargo box ever, and for good reason. That's because the RocketBox 16 offers plenty of cargo space for skis, paddles, and even jousting poles. The RocketBox 16 measures 92 by 26 by 15 inches (L x W x H), with a total storage area of 16 cubic feet. That's enough for a weekend's worth of gear for three or more people, or enough skis and boards for a carload of ski bums and snow bunnies. In fact, the long and lean design means there isn't much you can't carry. More significantly, the RocketBox 16 fits on round, square, and most factory crossbars, and includes quick-installation hardware and SKS locks. Outfitted with an old-school matte black finish, the RocketBox 16 carries a limited lifetime warranty. Top to learn more

Family camping trips can be a little cramped, as even the smallest tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks take up a ton of space in the car--and that doesn't account for the coolers, camping chairs, canopies, and family dog. Enter the Yakima SkyBox 16 rooftop cargo box, which stores a bunch of your gear in a single, out-of-the-way location. Designed to fit crossbar spreads as short as 24 inches, the SkyBox 16 includes quick-installation mounting hardware that accommodates round, square, and most factory crossbars. More importantly, the SkyBox 16 offers 16 cubic feet of storage space despite its short profile, so you don't have to cram everything in the trunk or back seat. Thanks to the drag-minimizing aerodynamic shape, the cargo box won't dramatically boost your gas consumption on long road trips. Other details include an extra-stiff lid that vibrates less than other cargo boxes and is easier to open and shut with one hand; an integrated track system for such accessories as a cargo net or base pad; a new lid shape that's easier to grip; an improved security latch that keeps your stuff safe; and a matte anti-scratch finish. Also equipped with SKS locks, the SkyBox 16 measures 81 by 36 by 15 inches (L x W x H). Top to learn more
Like an ICBM on the Roof of my SUV
Works great and fits my Honda Pilot w/ factory crossbars. This box is built noticeably sturdier when compared to some of the less expensive or older models. However, I'm not convinced the shell really needs to be thicker than other boxes including their own since they all come with a 100% lifetime warranty. I have never heard of problems with the boxes being damaged unless they fly off your car. The thicker shell does add to the weight of the box. At 47 pounds it is five pounds more than the comparable RocketBox 16. Honestly, I was looking for the cheapest one I could find that was long enough to fit skis and snowboards (this one is 81 inches-skis can be angled to get a few more inches if needed) and sit on top of my Honda Pilot without getting in the way of the rear hatch. Again, all Yaks and Thules have a 100% factory warranty and if you get them from rei they will stand by their stuff forever. I don't consider this one "cheap" at all but, it was the only that fit my...

Sweet Box! Not a thing to complain about.
I was looking for a cargo box that would fit the new style Subaru Outback (2010 and up) without interfering with the rear hatch, which apparently is a problem with the new integrated roof racks on the Outback. I found the Skybox 16s was one of the few boxes that would fit without hitting anything. The box arrived about 3 weeks after placing the order with free shipping. I put the box on the car in about 15 minutes without reading the instructions, adjusted it once to straighten it out and it has been great ever since. The only tricky part was getting the key removed from the inside the box when I was unpacking it, but that was me not thinking it through. The shape and titanium color looks great on the white Subaru too, I'm glad I didn't get the cheaper unpainted version.I've lost about 1.5 miles per gallon, which is a little better than what I expected. There is a tiny whoosh at speed, but the wind noise on the highway is actually much less than I had... Top to learn more

Used for suitcase on 2009 GMC Acadia
I bought a new 2009 GMC Acadia and found that I didn't have enough suitcase space for 6 vacationers. We were able to put 2 medium suitcases and one small suitcase in this luggage carrier along with our beachtowels. The box fits well and the 16S Yakimaa Skybox Pro doesn't interfer with the antenna. Just keep in mind that Yakima recommends that you sit this on the GMC cross rails that have to be purchased from the dealer. These rails are recommended for 200 lbs and the box weighs about 47 lbs. We heard no wind noise and were very pleased with the ride. Top to learn more
Yakima Skybox Pro 16s - Titanium
Love the Yakima Skybox Pro 16s. It's more rigid than the regular skybox, the Titanium color was a nice middle ground between the Silver or Black.Experienced no vibration with the Skybox Pro 16s. Very minimal noise even at highway speeds. In fact, driving with the box was less noisy than drving with just the cross rails and no box.The size is great for small to mid-size vehicles. The 16s is able to hold modern hyperbolic shape skiis (shorter than older straight skiis) with snowboards and plenty of other gear.Just don't exceed vehicles roof weight limitations and you'll be fine. The height allows for greater storage versatility compared to some of the lower profile boxes. The lock mechanism could be better, but overall I thought this cargo box was superior to other brands and shapes I had looked at. The clamping system to secure the box to the roof rails was quick & easy to use, extremely secure and better than found on other brands. Top to learn more

Sportrack Aero 1300 is awesome!
Much better than expected. I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks. Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far. Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar. The picture is actually inaccurate. Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395. Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box. The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture. I am surprised they are selling this box at this price. I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box. The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for... Great so far
Comes fully assembled except for the brackets that hold it to your cross bars. They are pretty simple to put in. I was a little afraid that it wouldn't fit the width of my factory cross bars on my Subaru Forester. They are a flat, "aero" design, but the brackets with this box fit them easily with room to spare. The bars would have to be REALLY wide to not fit. It is wide enough to use about 2/3 of the width of the bars on a Forester, and it fits about even with the top of the back window, with enough room for the hatch to open without touching, and about a foot behind the top of the front window. For less drag and better gas mileage, you are supposed to put it as far back as possible while allowing the rear door to open. For those with thick bars, other reviews complained the included screws are not long enough. The screws are standard lag bolts with a square shoulder. A quick trip to the hardware store with one of them to get the same size/thread screw in a longer... Top to learn more

Fantastic no frills cargo box
The Sportrack 1300 Roof Box is a great cargo carrier. If you need something to get your stuff to and from the mountains, campsite, grandma's house, or anywhere in between you can't go wrong with this carrier. The rationale: We have a mid-sized SUV. With two adults and two children, our long road trips to the mountains could get pretty tight even if our skis/boards were on the roof. We felt a cargo box was in order to store our skis/boards on top along with some other baggage to keep the rear windows clear and the claustaphobia to a minimum. I'd seen boxes at our local REI but couldn't justify +$600 on a box. So after reading the reviews on Amazon we ordered the SportRack Aero 1300 Roof Box.The price: Amazon's price with free shipping is tough to beat. Comparable lower-end cargo boxes at your local outdoors store are double the price for pretty much the same thing. The shipping: Incredibly fast. Mine arrived a couple days after ordering. The units come... Top to learn more

Yakima Skybox Looks and Works Great, but I had a rocky start
I ordered my Yakima Skybox for Christmas travel and have only tested it on a five hour trip from New Jersey to Maryland and back, but I used it fully loaded and in some fairly high winds, and didn't even know it was there. The spring loaded top opens effortlessly on either side. It looks great with the shiney onyx finish that matches the onyx black exterior of my Acura MDX. I found that the 16 cubic foot Skybox was just right for my needs and looked proportional to the size of my car. I had one disaster that was entirely my fault. Since I had no help to lift it onto the car, I used a kayak hoist to raise the Skybox into the ceiling of my garage in preparation for driving the car in and lowering it down onto the roof of the car. But the Skybox slipped out the straps and fell all the way to the garage floor, nose first. Much to my dismay, this caused some deep scratches on the top, but amazingly there were no cracks or other damage. That was impressive. Fortunately, the scratches are... Top to learn more

Great engineering and design
Yakima has done a great job with this skybox which apparently was upgraded in 2009. The casing is heavy duty enough so that the upper shell stays up when it is raised. The upper shell can be raised from either side. Cords are attached to the upper shell so that it is easy to lower. The locking handles on the sides are sturdy and work well. The attachment system is amazingly easy to use and sturdy--no need to use tools or thread bolts. Attaching it to cross bars is easy and quick. The unit stays on the cross bars securely and I did not notice any road noise (although my cross bars produce a hum). It mates with most cross bars. If you are comparing this with the Yakima Pro model, note that while the Pro costs a lot more, the only difference with the Pro is that you get two tone unit rather than an all black one and two accessories which you can order a la carte for a lot less (the cargo net, which I also bought and like) or can provide yourself (the bottom pad). The two units are... Top to learn more

Great box for hauling your stuff!
The engineering of this product is impressive. It opens easily from either side, goes on or off in a minute, won't scratch you car since there are no metal pieces on the bottom, and most importantly, holds a whole lot of cargo! In addition, the redesigned locks don't require you to apply torque to the key to open--there's a separate metal handle for that. It's so long that it was a bit tricky to figure out a way for my (shorter) wife and I to take it on/off the mini van, but we've got that technique down now with her on the side of the car and me in the back.I think this is a bit sturdier than the similar one from Thule. In fact the only one that I've seen which is better would be the Pro version of the same cargo box, but I wasn't going to pay that much more for essentially the same functionality. I was happy to find this on sale at Amazon! Top to learn more

About Yakima Yakima has been dedicated to eradicating "rack envy" for more than 30 years. The company employs a ton of cyclists, campers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, hikers, and kayakers, all of whom load up their car racks and take to the forests, slopes, and waterways every chance they get. This dedication helps Yakima come up with new ideas and inspirations each year. Ideas like, "Hey, let's make a snow mount you can operate with gloves on so we don't get a debilitating case of popsicle finder." Or, "Let's put padding and nets in our cargo boxes so gear doesn't rattle around like it's in a giant maraca." And, "Let's put integrated bottle openers on hitch-mount bike racks, since you can't carry one around while you're wearing spandex fancy pants." Boasting a legacy of innovation and quality, Yakima is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon.
Plenty of extra storage
I have just purchased this car top carrier after borrowing a friends Thule box for multiple past trips. The Yakima was better priced and just as functional. Installation was a cinch (literally) easier than the Thule, even though it was a bigger box. Despite it's large size, I was able to install it alone. It held up very well, driving home in a torrential down pour, everything remained completely dry. You can't even tell it is up there while driving, and no noticable change in fuel efficiency. The only knock compared to the Thule is the locking mechanism. Although it is very easy to use, I feel the Thule lock is a little more secure. I was able to lock the Yakima box even though it was a little over-stuffed in the rear, and there was a little gap in the back. I wouldn't be able to close the Thule under those circumstances. But, if packed appropriately, that is not an issue. Top to learn more
